A few weeks ago, who'd have thought Roger Federer would enter the Hamburg Masters in better physical shape than main rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic?
Nadal succumb to foot blisters at the Rome Masters, and Djokovic, despite winning the title, admitted he still wasn't 100 percent. The walking wounded also featured Andy Roddick, Fernando Gonzalez, Radek Stepanek, Nicolas Almagro and Juan Martin Del Potro, giving ammunition to those, Nadal included, who suggest this year's clay-court season is too condensed. Roddick, suffering from back spasms, subsequently skipped Hamburg.
Federer, after seemingly getting back on track by reaching the Monte Carlo Masters final, exited to the pesky Stepanek in the Rome quarters. He'll no doubt be boosted by a return to Hamburg, where the world No. 1 tries for a fifth title.
Memorably in the 2007 final, aided by the heavier conditions, Federer ended Nadal's record 81-match clay-court winning streak. Nadal is seeking his first Hamburg crown.

Qualche settimana fa chi l’avrebbe detto che Roger Federer si sarebbe presentato ad Amburgo in migliori condizioni fisiche rispetto ai rivali Rafael Nadal e Novak Djokovic?
Nadal ha dovuto soccombere alle ferite al piede al Masters Series di Roma, e Djokovic, benché vincitore del titolo, ha ammesso di non essere ancora al 100%. La lista dei feriti include anche Andy Roddick, Fernando Gonzalez, Radek Stepanek, Nicolas Almagro e Juan Martin Del Potro, dando ulteriori argomenti a chi, come Nadal, pensa che la stagione su terra quest’anno sia troppo condensata in poche settimane. Roddick, sofferente di spasmi alla schiena, ha di conseguenza saltato Amburgo.
Federer, dopo esser parso nuovamente sulla strada giusta raggiungendo la finale di Monte Carlo, è uscito contro il fastidioso Stepanek nei quarti a Roma. Senza dubbio sarà caricato dal ritorno ad Amburgo, dove il numero 1 del mondo va alla caccia del quinto titolo.
Nella memorabile finale del 2007, aiutato dalle condizioni più pesanti, Federer ha interrotto la striscia record di 81 vittorie consecutive sulla terra da parte di Nadal. Lo spagnolo è in cerca del primo titolo ad Amburgo.
