World No 1 Justine Henin, 25, stunned tennis yesterday by announcing her immediate retirement and vowing she would not be back. The player to whom she has often been compared summed up reaction to the Belgian's decision pretty neatly. "A shock to the whole tennis world," said Roger Federer. "The timing is particularly surprising when you think the French Open and Wimbledon are coming up and what they mean to her."
It was the last mysterious act of a very private person's career.
There have been no shortage of premature retirements among the sport's greats, but perhaps none as stark as Henin's declaration that she had lost the intensity to compete at the pitch she wanted and would be moving on in life with immediate effect.
Martina Hingis and Henin's compatriot Kim Clijsters are recent examples, but perhaps it echoes most strongly Bjorn Borg's sudden exit in 1982, aged 26.
Yet even Borg's march over the horizon does not really compare. By then, he had been overtaken by John McEnroe, whereas Henin still holds an enormous lead at the top of the world rankings.
She has won seven Grand Slam titles and is still the defending champion at Roland Garros and Flushing Meadow after winning 63 matches last season and losing just four.
It turns out that the most significant victory in her mind may have been the final contest of 2007, an epic win over Maria Sharapova in the WTA Tour's year-end championships in Madrid, considered to be one of the greatest women's matches ever played "I thought, I cannot play another match like that or have another season like that," said Henin yesterday in Brussels.
"It was soon afterwards that I started thinking about retiring. The dream of the child is over. I am relieved and very proud.
"I've been playing tennis now for 20 years and it's been my whole life, but as a woman you get older and need to think about the future." […]
There was always a physical brittleness to her and in recent years she had managed her schedule carefully to avoid getting run down. […]
There was nothing remotely brittle, however, about her all-round technique and particularly the near perfection of her backhand, a weapon that could effortlessly turn defence into attack and which has been one of the greatest individual strokes the game has seen. She always played with a phenomenal intensity.
When a lifetime has been spent focusing on nothing more than tennis, it is understandable that the light can go out suddenly. Henin's exit leaves women's tennis wide open.

La numero uno mondiale Justin Henin, 25, ha stupido il mondo del tennis annunciando il suo immediato ritiro e promettendo che non tornerà più. Il giocatore al quale lei è stata spesso accostata ha giudicato elegantemente la decisione della Belga. “ Uno shock per il mondo del tennis”, ha detto Roger Federer. “ stupisce il momento se si pensa che il French Open e Wimbledon sono alle porte e quanto sono importanti per lei.”
È stato l’ultimo atto misterioso della carriera di una persona molto riservata.
Non sono certo mancati ritiri prematuri di grandi sportivi, ma forse nessuno è stato così forte come la dichiarazione dell’Henin di aver perso l’intensità nel competere in campo al livello che desiderava e di voler cambiare vita immediatamente.
Martina Hingis e la compatriota dell’Henin, Kim Clijsters, sono esempi recenti, ma forse ci si ricorda di più l’uscita improvvisa di Bjorn Borg nel 1982 a 26 anni.
Ma nemmeno il cammino di Borg verso il tramonto è paragonabile. Al tempo, era stato superato da John McEnroe, mentre invece l’Henin è ancora saldamente al comando delle classifiche mondiali.
Ha vinto 7 titoli dello Slam ed è ancora la campionessa uscente al Roland Garros e a Flushing Meadow dopo aver vinto 63 partite la scorsa stagione e averne perse solo 4.
Sembra che la vittoria decisiva nella sua testa sia stata lo scontro finale del 2007, una vittoria epica contro Maria Sharapova al torneo di fine anno a Madrid, considerato uno dei match più belli mai giocati dalle donne. “Ho pensato, non posso giocare un altro match così o avere una stagione come questa”, ha detto l’Henin ieri a Bruxelles.
“E stato subito dopo quel match che ho iniziato a pensare al ritiro. Il sogno del bambino è finito.Sono sollevata e molto orgogliosa”.
“Ho giocato a tennis per 20 ed è stata la mia vita, ma da donna si invecchia e devi pensare al tuo futuro”.[…]
È sempre stata fragile fisicamente e ultimamente era riuscita ad organizzare la stagione attentamente. […]
Non c’era invece niente di fragile nella sua tecnica completa e soprattutto nel suo rovescio vicino alla perfezione, un’arma che poteva trasformare senza sforzo la difesa dall’attacco e che è stato uno dei colpi migliori che il gioco del tennis abbia mai visto. Ha sempre giocato con un’intensità fenomenale.
Quando si dedica tutta una vita nient’altro che al tennis, è comprensibile che le luci si spengano all’improvviso. L’abbandono dell’Henin lascia il tennis femminile spalancato.
