Henin annuncia il suo ritiro dal tennis

Henin, or Juju as the French called her, was one of the smallest women on the circuit at just under 5ft 6ins, yet she had the power to compete with the big hitters, unlike the similarly-built Martina Hingis. Henin had no fear, yet her success came at a considerable cost. Time and again she was laid low by virus problems as her body rebelled against the punishing schedule, while her back also creaked frequently. On many occasions she cut a pale forlorn figure, yet when she was fit and well and her confidence high, she could dominate the world's best, particularly on clay.
It was her mother, who died when Henin was young, who first took her to Roland Garros as a child, and the love affair was permanent. Not so her family relationships. For years she was estranged from her father and siblings, until last year when one of her bothers was in a coma after a car accident, and this led to a rapprochement that delighted everybody.
Before then her surrogate father was her coach, Carlos Rodriguez, who has been with her since she was 14, and above all helped her overcome chronic nerves, and was instrumental in evolving her game, both technically and mentally. As well as her success on clay, she won the US Open twice, including last year, the Australian Open, and was twice runner-up at Wimbledon. Added to this, and much to her joy, she was Olympic champion in Athens.
"Pound for pound Justine is the greatest player of her generation," said Billie-Jean King. "I trust she has not come to this decision quickly or easily and I wish her the very best. She is an extraordinary player and a special person and a true champion both in tennis and in life."
Roger Federer said that he was "totally shocked" that Henin had retired, "a shock for the whole tennis world", and that "she must have her reasons but it is a surprise given that it is before the French Open".

Henin, o Juju come la chiamano i francesi, e’ stata una delle donne più piccole del circuito, appena sotto 1 metro e 67, e ciò nonostante e’ stata in grado di competere con le più forti del circuito, al contrario dei Martina Hingis, a lei simile fisicamente. Henin non ha avuto paura ma il suo successo l’ha pagato caro. Problemi causati da un virus difficilmente debellabile accostati ai frequenti cedimenti della schiena l’hanno tormentata a lungo. In molte occasioni e’ apparsa debole e rassegnata, ma quando la salute l’ha accompagnata e il morale l‘ha sostenuta ha dominato il tennis, soprattutto sulla terra rossa.
Fu la madre, scomparsa quando Henin era ancora giovane, a portarla da piccola al Roland Garros, facendo sbocciare un amore perpetuo. Non lo stesso in famiglia: per anni e’ stata distante dal padre e dai fratelli, sino all’anno scorso quando un fratello e’ finito in coma a seguito di un incidente stradale, portando ad un riavvicinamento ben salutato da tutti.
Prima di allora Henin e’ stata allenata dal suo padrino, Carlos Rodriguez, vicino a lei dall’età’ di 14 anni, responsabile della sua stabilità psicologica e soprattutto fondamentale nell’evoluzione tecnica e mentale del gioco dell’Henin. Oltre a Parigi, ha vinto agli Us Open due volte, l’ultima l’anno scorso, l’Australian Open ed e’ stata due volte finalista a Wimbledon. Inoltre, e con sua somma gioia, e’ stata medaglia d’oro alle Olimpiadi di Atene.
“Justine e’ la più grande tennista della sua generazione” ha detto Billie-Jean King. “Credo che questa decisione non sia stata impulsiva e facile e le auguro ogni bene per il futuro. E’ una giocatrice straordinaria e una persona speciale, una campionessa nello sport e nella vita”.
Roger Federer si e’ detto "scioccato" dal ritiro di Henin, "un colpo per tutto il circuito tennistico", ed ha aggiunto "avrà avuto le sue ragioni ma e’ sorprendente che lo faccia nell’imminenza del Roland Garros".
