At just 25 years of age, Justine Henin, the world No1, decided to walk away from tennis yesterday, saying that she was “at the end of the road”. In one of the most poignant announcements of the modern era, Henin effectively decided that the ghouls that haunted her for so long are best confronted without a racket in her grasp. “This is the end of a child's dream,” the Belgian said on becoming the first woman to retire at the top of the rankings. “I have thought a lot about this. I started thinking about it late last year. I leave with my head held high.” The loss of Henin is immeasurable. Her style was unique, her resolution in the face of physical and spiritual adversity stunning, she possessed a power that baffled so many, given her diminutive stature, and yet this was the glory of the ponytailed waif - how she took on and defeated those who ought to have devoured her. It was very much a case of her art imitating life. Before she became a professional and at every turn thereafter, Henin fought battles with her family, her conscience and her body. That she was able to hold most of it together and remain the best player in the world for so long - 61 consecutive weeks at the latest stage - represented a heart-warming and defining story of the women's game. There would inevitably come the time when surrender was an option, but this soon?

A soli 25 anni, Justine Henin, la n. 1 del tennis mondiale, ha annunciato ieri il suo ritiro dal mondo del tennis dicendo che era “alla fine della strada”. Durante uno degli annunci più tristi ed emozionanti dell’era moderna, la Henin ha dichiarato che i fantasmi che la rincorrono da lungo tempo si possono affrontare meglio senza la racchetta in mano. “ Questa è la fine del mio sogno di bambina” ha detto la Belga, diventando la prima donna al top della classifica ad annunciare il ritiro. “Ci ho pensato molto. Ho cominciato a pensarci già alla fine dello scorso anno. E me ne vado a testa alta”. Il ritiro della Henin è una perdita incommensurabile. Il suo stile era unico, la sua determinazione di fronte ad avversità fisiche e morali qualcosa di incredibile, nonostante la piccola statura possedeva il potere di mettere ko molte giocatrici. E questa è stata la gloria di questa ragazza con la coda di cavallo, il modo in cui ha sconfitto coloro che volevano divorarla. Le sue capacità hanno seguito di pari passo la sua vita. Prima di diventare una professionista e anche dopo, la Henin ha combattuto battaglie con la famiglia, la sua coscienza e il suo corpo. Il fatto che sia stata capace di tenere tutto insieme e di rimanere la migliore giocatrice del mondo così a lungo, con 61 settimane consecutive nella posizione di n. 1, rappresenta una storia unica di grande cuore e carattere nel tennis femminile. Il tempo della resa sarebbe dunque giunto prima o poi, ma perché così presto?
