World No 1 Justine Henin has announced her shock retirement from professional tennis with immediate effect. The 25-year-old Belgian, who won seven Grand Slam events in a glittering career, pulled out of the Rome Masters this week blaming fatigue which lead to speculation she was set to quit the sport while still top of the rankings. "It's a big day in my life," Henin said at a press conference in her homeland. "I know that it's a shock and a surprise for a lot of people but it's a decision I have been thinking about for some time. "It's the end of a great adventure, the end of something I had dreamed of since I was five. "I have experienced everything I could have. I have lived completely for tennis. A new future is ahead and I won't go back on this decision”. Henin has been struggling to reach the form which earned her the last three titles at Roland Garros in the build up to this year's French Open. She admitted last week she was lacking confidence and has been beaten four times in the last four months including a 6-2, 6-0 hammering by Serena Williams in Miami last month.

La numero 1 del tennis Justine Henin ha annunciato il suo immediato ritiro shock dal tennis professionistico. La Belga venticinquenne, vincitrice di 7 prove dello Slam durante la sua sfolgorante carriera, aveva rinunciato a partecipare al torneo Masters di Roma questa settimana accusando uno stato di fatica che ha portato a pensare che fosse pronta a ritirarsi ancora al top della sua carriera e della classifica mondiale. “E’ un grande giorno della mia vita” ha detto la Henin nel corso di una conferenza stampa tenuta nel suo paese “ e so che si tratta di uno shock e di una sorpresa per molte persone ma è una decisione alla quale stavo pensando da molto tempo. E’ la fine di un grande avventura, di qualcosa che avevo sognato fin dall’età di 5 anni. Ho avuto tutto quello che ho desiderato. E ho dedicato tutta la mia vita al tennis. Adesso si apre di fronte a me un nuovo futuro e non tornerò indietro sulla mia decisione.” All’inizio di stagione la Henin ha fatto fatica a ritrovare la forma fisica e mentale che le ha guadagnato gli ultimi 3 titoli al Roland Garros. La scorsa settimana ha ammesso che mancava di fiducia in se stessa e infatti è stata sconfitta ben quattro volte negli ultimi 4 mesi incluso il 6-2, 6-0 inflittole da Serena Williams a Miami lo scorso mese.
