Wide-open French, but Serena, Ivanovic slight favourites -
French Open incerti, ma con Serena e Ana leggermente favorite

Justine Henin left her sport last week and a chance at tying a storied mark in Roland Garros history: France's Suzanne Lenglen's record four straight titles between 1920-23. She also left the Roland Garros field as wide open as it was in 2000 after Steffi Graf had retired and before the Williams sisters had begun to dominate. Here are the contenders, spoilers, and non-contenders.
Top contenders
SERENA WILLIAMS: Sure, she was stunned by Dinara Safina in Berlin, but before that the US' top woman had put together a 17-match winning streak, including a green clay-crown in Charleston. The '02 champ has played as much as she's had in six years and is reaping the benefits. At crunch time, if she's clocking her groundies, it's tough to pick against her, especially considering that amongst her main rivals, only Henin was a clay-court dominator.
ANA IVANOVIC: So much talent yet so inconsistent. The Serbian has a clay-court upbringing, but speed and defense are not her forte, two very necessary elements on dirt. If she displays a little more patience and is fortunate enough to get a dose of hot and dry weather, this '07 finalist is true contender. Her losses at Berlin and Rome were disturbing, but if she loses her head like she did at the Aussie Open, she'll be the bridesmaid once again.
JELENA JANKOVIC: Has any player complained more about a general lack of energy this year? The Serb is a terrific mover with a super-steady game that translates well onto clay, but her late fades at the Slams have been frightening. Prop her for winning Rome (over Alize Cornet and with a pullout from Maria Sharapova!) but don't take her for her word that she's ready to Slam until she actually reaches a final. But no doubt, this French Open is a unique opportunity for her, as she's one of the few tired and true clay-court players.
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Here today, gone tomorrow. Kuznetsova grew up on clay, has Spanish coaches and the forehand to do major damage on dirt, but she's not trustworthy in Slam finals anymore. Plus, she's been only marginally impressive this year.
MARIA SHARAPOVA: Of course she's not a clay-courter, but she reached the semis last year without her vaunted serve and, when healthy this year, she's looked all the part of a No. 1, winning her first clay-crown at Amelia Island. If she can avoid marathon matches early (a real problem as of late), a run to the final isn't impossible. Neither is a title if she goes up against someone substantially mentally weaker than she is (aka JJ).
DINARA SAFINA: A totally unexpected title run in Berlin, not because she's without talent, but because she upset Henin, Serena and Elena Dementieva en route to her first Tier I title. Although she doesn't have the mental makeup to win a Slam, a run to the semis or final is not a completely nutty thought. Just ask brother Marat, the king of crazy quotes.
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Forgotten by many, the tireless Russian speedster and '04 finalist still believes she can win a Slam and reach No. 1. While the top ranking appears out of the question, she did reach the Berlin final and has been raising her level with each passing week. When she's locked into her relentless baseline game, no one wants a piece of her. But, can her zany serve hold up under pressure?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Of course she's been down in the dumps since her December mugging and has lost almost all of her confidence, but she's had a few decent wins lately and has the smarts and variety to do major damage on dirt.
VENUS WILLIAMS: She hasn't played much since Miami, but if this '02 finalist can get a couple of wins under belt, she'll scare anyone. What she needs to do is to decide to stay more in her Wimby-winning defensive mode until she gets the right ball to strike, rather than that her more current sloppy RG offensive ode, where she goes for broke too much.

French Open incerti, ma con Serena e Ana leggermente favorite

Justine Henin ha appena lasciato il suo sport la scorsa settimana, e la possibilità di incidere il suo marchio di fabbrica nella storia del Roland Garros superando il record di Suzanne Lenglen, vincitrice di questo torneo dal 1920 al 1923.
Come nel 2000 quando si ritirò Stefi Graf prima dell’inizio del dominio delle sorelle Williams, il ritiro della Henin lascia una grande apertura a molte tenniste.
Ecco la lista delle contendenti e delle non contendenti.

Le maggiori contendenti

SERENA WILLIAMS: Certamente Serena è stata sconfitta severamente da Dinara Safina a Berlino ma prima di questa sconfitta l’americana aveva vinto 17 match consecutivi incluso la vittoria nel torneo di Charleston sulla terra battuta americana. La numero due ha giocato quanto basta negli ultimi sei anni raccogliendo in questo modo dei benefici.
Il tempo attuale si sa frantuma gli atleti, ma se Serena saprà gestire al meglio i suoi impegni tennistici,sarà dura da battere specialmente ora dopo il ritiro della Henin che era l’unica dominatrice sulla terra.
ANA IVANOVIC: giocatrice di grandissimo talento ma ancora molto incostante.La Serba ha buoni doti per giocare bene sulla terra, ma la velocità e la sua difesa due elementi indispensabili sulla terra rossa non sono ancora abbastanza forti.
Se saprà mostrare una maggior pazienza e sarà abbastanza fortunata nel trovare un tempo
caldo e secco come nella finale del 2007 sarà certamente una delle protagoniste principali.Le sue sconfitte di Berlino e Roma hanno disturbato Ana, ma se perde la testa come ha fatto agli Australian Open sarà nuovamente la damigella d’onore.
JELENA JANKOVIC: C’’è nessuna giocatrice che si è lamentata più della generale mancanza di energia di quanto ha fatto lei quest’anno? La Serba è una terribile giocatrice negli spostamenti con un super gioco che si traduce molto bene sulla terra, ma la sua ultima apparizione nei tornei dello Slam è stata sbiadita e timorosa.
La sua vittoria a Roma su Alize Cornet e l’uscita anzitempo per ririro di Maria Sharapova,non ha fornito la sicurezza necessaria per dichiarare che è pronta per un torneo del Grande Slam finchè veramente raggiunge la finale.
Ma non vi è dubbio che questo French Open è un'unica opportunità per lei dato che una delle poche giocatrici seriamente contendenti sulla terra battuta.
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Oggi qui, domani là. Kuznetsova è cresciuta sulla terra ha un coach spagnolo e un dritto che fa molto male alle avversarie sulla terra, ma non è ancora affidabile nelle finali dei tornei del Grande Slam. Inoltre quest’anno ha impressionato solo in modo molto marginale.
MARIA SHARAPOVA : Naturalmente non è una giocatrice da terra ma ha raggiunto la semifinale qui a Parigi lo scorso anno senza contare sul suo gran servizio e quest’anno che ha risolto i problemi di salute e stata vista da tutti come la numero uno vincendo il suo primo torneo sulla terra americana di AMELIA ISLAND. Se saprà evitare match maratona sin dall’inizio ( suo vero e reale problema) una corsa in finale a Parigi non è impossibile. Nemmeno un titolo qui lo è, sempre che Maria riuscirà a crescere in modo sostanziale la sua debolezza e fragilità mentale.
DINARA SAFINA: Totalmente inaspettata il suo titolo a BERLINO non perché non ha talento ha infatti battuto Henin,Serena,Elena Dementievas sulla sua strada per la conquista del suo primo titolo di un grande torneo.Sebbene non ha la giusta mentalità per la vittoria in un torneo Grande Slam una semifinale o finale non possono essere esclusi come traguardi. Basta chiedere al fratello Marat il re delle quote pazze.
ELENA DEMENTIEVA : Dimenticata da molti la mai stanca e super rapida ragazza russa finalista nel 2004 crede ancora di poter vincere uno Slam e raggiungere il traguardo della numero 1.
Mentre il vertice di classifica appare fuori questione, ha comunque raggiunto la finale a BERLINO ed ha alzato il suo livello di gioco col passare delle settimane. Quando esprime il suo spietato gioco da fondo nessuno vorrebbe giocare con lei. Ma può il suo semplicione e claunesco servizio la salverà e funzionarerà sotto pressione?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE : Certamente è scesa da Dicembre scorso e ha perso molto della sua sicurezza, ma ha fatto delle buone vittorie di recente e dispone di un bel e vario gioco che sulla terra può dar fastidio.
VENUS WILLIAMS : Non ha giocato molto da Miami ma la finalista del 2002 può fare un paio vittorie e iniziare a spaventare chiunque. Quello di cui ha bisogno è decidere di stare più concentrata nella sua difesa vincente finché ha la palla giusta da colpire, piuttosto che fare un ROLAD GARROS totalmente offensivo dove può sbagliare troppo.
